Red Light

If you received a res light ticket in Queens or in New York we can help!

Running a Red Light – New York State

Running a red light is one of the most common moving violations in Queens and NYC (especially when police officers must meet their ticket quotas). Violations for running a red light usually cause insurance companies to raise your rates because statistically they find that people who run red lights are more likely to get into an accident than those with a clean record. You end up facing points on your license, a fine, an increase in insurance that usually lasts three to five years. We have had great success in fighting tickets for running a red light.

Fines and Penalties for Running a Red Light In Queens & NYS

(Section 1111d1 of NYS Traffic Law)

The fines for running a red light in Queens and NYC are more than if you live anywhere outside of the city. In cities with less than a million inhabitants (all places except NYC, like Nassau or Suffolk, or upstate NY) your fines are as follows:

  • $50-100 for the first offense
  • $100-$200 for the second offense in 18 months
  • $250-$400 for the third offense in 18 months

Since we are located in Forest Hills, Queens, many of our clients face heavier fines for running a red light in NYC, a city with a population of over one million people. In NYC the fines are:

  • $100-300 for the first offense
  • $200-$500 for the second offense in 18 months
  • $500-$1000 for the third offense in 18 months

If a policeman wrote your ticket and not a camera, it is a traffic infraction and carries 3 points. In addition to the fines and points, you should expect an increase in your auto insurance that will last three to five years. For more information on how tickets affect your insurance click here.

Will I Get a Ticket for Running a Red Light If I Go Through a Yellow Light in Queens or NYS?

In NYS, the yellow light is a warning to traffic that it will soon turn red. It is legal to drive through a yellow light, providing that your vehicle enter the intersection or past the crosswalk or limit line prior to the light turning red. So the answer is no- you will not get a ticket for going through a yellow light.
